Case Study: Sydney Trains Condition Monitoring System

Client Overview

Sydney Trains operates the rail networks across Sydney, Australia. They are committed to delivering safe, reliable, and efficient railway services. Their expansive network requires a sophisticated approach to condition monitoring to maintain high standards of service.

The Challenge:

Sydney Trains needed a robust condition monitoring system to track the performance and maintenance needs of various components within their network. The system had to integrate multiple monitoring devices, provide real-time alerts, and be capable of handling complex data analysis to pre-emptively address maintenance issues and minimize service disruptions.

Jundra's Approach:

  • Integration of Monitoring Devices:

The system unified various monitoring devices, such as Bearing and Brake Temperature sensors, Angle of Attack sensors, Wheel Impact Load Detectors, vibration sensors, weight sensors, noise sensors, and Pantograph condition monitoring systems, into a central dashboard.

  • Real-time Dashboard and Alerts:

A central CMO dashboard displayed device status metrics, while automated alerts were sent to key service personnel in case of any faults or anomalies detected. An example is where a bearings has seized due to excessive heat, the data from hot wheel detectors the track wayside generated an alert signal and a dashboard icon from green to red, indicating the train should be removed from service immediately to avoid damage to rail infrastructure.

  • Data Analysis and Reporting:

The system collated data into a central database, which was then used for detailed analysis and report generation, ensuring efficient operation of the rail network. One of the large screens in the ROC (Rail Operations Centre ) features the CMO Dashboard and several operator screens.

  • Enhanced Operational Efficiency:

With real-time tracking and alerts, Sydney Trains could significantly reduce downtime and improve the reliability of services.

  • Predictive Maintenance:

The system’s predictive analysis capabilities allowed for pre-emptive maintenance actions, reducing the likelihood of unexpected breakdowns. An example includes vision sensors monitoring the carbon strip fitted on the pantograph frame, predicting how much longer it can operate before it wears due to friction and requires replacing.

  • Long-Term Partnership:

The success of the CMO system has resulted in a partnership that has spanned over 14 years, with Jundra Pty Ltd continuing to support and maintain the system. Over the years Jundra has continued to develop new features and improve the platform.

The Outcome

The CMO system has been a cornerstone in Sydney Trains' operations for over a decade
